Definition of God: What is God?

The Vedanta Sutra starts by “defining” God, as follows:

अथातो ब्रह्मजिज्ञासा । ब्रसू-१,१.१ ।

जन्माद्यस्य यतः । ब्रसू-१,१.२ ।

English Translation:

Now, therefore, starts the inquiry about brahman(absolute/eternal) |

That/He from which/whom everything else emmanates, is God ||

The first verse starts with “therefore”, because veda-anta means the end of the vedas(knowledge), and hence is meant to deal with the ultimate knowledge. The second verse of the vedanta sutra starts dealing with the subject by defining “God”.

Therefore, God, by definition is the source of everything that exists, including God Himself.

Whats so special about this definition?

The definition of God in vedanta sutra doesn’t leave room for the question “If God created everything, who created God”. The answer to this question is “God Himself is the cause of Himself, because everything, in principle, includes God too.
